Initially, it may look as if construction project management is the same as other project management. Though they have share things in common in the aspect of traditional five phases of project management, which are:  initial, planning, execution, performance and monitoring.

But that where it all ends, construction project management is a different ball game from conventional project management in the sense that it imbibes the extensive knowledge of the construction industry, a distinct field with it peculiarities.

When embarking on construction project, it is important to ensure that all the responsibilities are met. Construction project management averages about 120 responsibilities, which requires strategic planning, to ensure these responsibilities are met, every contractor, supplier and architect must remain on schedule and within budget.

Communication

Communication is important in every facet of human endeavor, and is not left behind in construction project management.

Whatever happens at the construction site must be documented, either good or bad, so you must establish flow of communication with everybody   that is involve in the construction project: suppliers, men on the field, architects information must not be in short supply, to be able to affect any likely defect ion the construction before is too late.

Planning

Planning should start before the actual construction begins, and continually reverse the plans as needed until the project ends. The first three stages in construction, which are design, pre-construction and procurement need serious planning, not only to work within budget, but to also save time, avoid environmental hazards.

There may be need to reverse any of these, as the event unfolds.

Observation

It is practically impossible to achieve success in construction project management by merely sitting down. Project managers must be on site to observe the progress recorded first hand.

Construction management requires more attention and effort that other fields, you can think off.

Getting acquainted with everybody on the site and their duties will help you to notice any change in the working situation, and what is likely needed that might not have been provided for in the initial plan.

Monitor cost and budget

Is advisable to keep record of wages, permits and equipment used at the construction project progresses from the bidding process to project closeout, all monetary transactions must be kept intact.

Make use of automated reporting system

You may be too busy to reply to all mails individually, call and others daily. It is advisable to make use of automated reporting systems.
